Hello Friends!

I hope this finds you doing well and enjoying this holiday season. I have been delinquent in the timing of my updates, but it has been a strange year for me, as I know it has been for others too. Ironically I was able to produce a lot of artwork last year during Covid and this year I haven't been as productive creatively. But, I have managed to show work this year in a few different exhibitions and get a few new jobs!

Currently, I have Visual Days - Decade 3 (2020) showing at Shemer Art Center. It's the accumulation of the 366 drawings that I did everyday of 2020. I never really expected to show this project this way. It is definitely a temporary installation that I hope to show in different ways in the future. This exhibition will be up until January 6, 2022. If you are in the Phoenix area and want to see it, please give me a call because I'd love to meet you there.

To see this project in more detail go to the link below and follow my @visualday.decade3 Instagram account. I posted a new drawing everyday everyday in 2020.

This last image shows a gallery view which leads me to tell about my new job. I am the Exhibitions Manager at Shemer Art Center. Shemer is a small non-profit art center that offers art classes, workshops, lectures, events, and exhibitions. Shemer is located in a historic house that was donated to the City of Phoenix by Martha Shemer. The galleries consist of three bedrooms and the front lobby and dining room. It's a very unique space to exhibit artwork. I showed some pieces there at the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 in two different exhibitions, and that led to some conversations, which led to my new part time job. I started slowly in May and I have hung three shows since then. The current exhibition is Only Black and White and features work in all media that is only black and white, with some shades of grey. I really love the work in this show and the theme. I was incredibly honored when my 2020 drawing project was accepted into this show. The juror, Mary Meyer, had no idea it was my piece. I have had so much fun working with the staff, volunteers, artists, and jurors coordinating and hanging the last three shows. This job has taken me back to my time in Boston and my experience at The New Art Center as the Exhibitions Director, that I started in July 2001, twenty years ago, where I learned many tricks about installing art in historical a building. I think our schedule has seven exhibitions for next year and I'm very excited for all the new art and installation challenges! Here are some more views of the current show and the front lobby where we are featuring Mark Klett's photography as the Shemer's Honors Artist of 2021.

During 2021, I was also hired for a new public art project that I have been slowly designing over the past few months. I'm not quite ready to share my ideas yet because they are still simmering in my head. They need a little more cooking time. Right now I know that the project will be a free standing sculpture with some moving parts and panel designs in colored handmade ceramic tile. I'm looking at maps of the site and sketching ideas about how the nature and use of this land has changed over time. The project will be for a new housing development in Avondale, AZ called Alamar. The developer is committed to having art in the community and is commissioning a public art piece for every small neighborhood park. I think that 14 artists have been hired so far and there are more to come! In my next update I will definitely show some progress of this project.

Thanks for reading this all the way to the end!
Stay safe, healthy, and creative out there and enjoy your friends and family when you can,
Heidi
